Ange Postecoglou has told the Celtic hierarchy that he wants to sign Aaron Mooy this summer according to 90min.com. The midfielder is already known to the new manager as he broke into The Socceroos team during Postecoglou’s reign as manager.

It is said that the Greek-born boss sees Mooy as an alternative to James McCarthy who has been linked to Celtic over the past couple of transfer windows.

Aaron Mooy already has links to the Scottish game, making his professional debut at Paisley club St. Mirren.

In 2012 the 30-year-old made the move down under and joined Melbourne City. After impressing in A-League, he moved to another City Group club – Manchester City – but was sent on loan to Huddersfield almost instantly, the loan soon became a fixed deal.

Mooy was then loaned to Brighton before making it a permanent deal in January of 2020. Watching Mooy on a couple of occasions I thought he was a standout in the Brighton midfield, as did many Brighton fans.

It is said that Mooy is keen on a move back to the U.K. this summer but his wage would be an obstacle. According to abc.net.au, the Australian earns $180,000 (£154,503) at Shanghai Port, something well out of Celtic’s reach. If he was to join Celtic he would need to take a pay cut of over £120,000 – something I don’t think is realistic.

Even if the finances were more suitable, I believe the talented fringe players must be given their chance to impress before signings like this are discussed. Celtic will not hand Mooy anything near 30k – never mind the figures he’s on right now.
