As Callum McGregor’s injury is defined as ‘significant’ by Ange Postecoglou as he worries over the time on the sidles for his captain, Victor Wanyama has become a free agent.

The midfielder’s contract is up now that the MLS season has expired, and Celtic fans are wondering if a Celtic return could happen, especially with the injury to Callum McGregor.

Celtic will find out their skipper’s fate today, with McGregor at a specialist, but it isn’t looking good. Bringing in a free agent is a smart idea, but probably slightly unrealistic.

Of course there’s an appetite to bring him back to Glasgow, he was a terrific player for the club and made an impact down south. He’s been linked to Celtic while he was with Spurs, but sadly nothing came of it.

He’s talked about wanting to play for Celtic again, and is more than willing to make a move back to Scotland. Talking to Football Scotland a year ago, he said;

“Celtic was a club that I would love to play for again and again. It’s more than a club. I enjoyed my time there.

“I honestly want to come back and give it a last go because I love the club, the people there, the fans, just everything there was great. They give the players everything to go on the pitch and perform. Everything was just on top.”

Bringing him back would be great, but I very much doubt it would happen for a few reasons. Celtic already have a few players able to cover the position, with Abildgaard set to make his fun debut on Saturday. Postecoglou has no relationship with the player, and times have moved on since he was last at Celtic.

I wouldn’t be against the signing, though. He’d add some experience to the relatively young squad, and his quality is known.

I suppose if anything is to happen, Postecoglou will wait until the results of Callum McGregor’s scans are clear.
