The Celtic Women were in action at the weekend and gave Hoops fans something to shout about as they smashed eight goals past Forfar Farmington without reply.

The girls avenged the frustrating draw from earlier in this season’s campaign by thumping Forfar on their own patch.

It meant Fran Alonso’s side kept the pressure on at the top. Glasgow City currently lead the table; the Hoops five points off the defending champions. Vitally, the team are only two points behind Rangers women and in with a shout of a Champions League spot.

First half goals from Anna Filbey, Izzy Atkinson, Sarah Ewens and Sarah Teegarden put Celtic comfortably ahead at half time.

Chole Craig converted from the spot in the second half before Glasgow derby hero, Mariah Lee got in on the act to make it 6-0.

Filbey grabbed her second to make it seven and Lee also got her second to round off an emphatic win.

It’s an exciting time to follow the Ghirls in their first season as full-time athletes.

Glasgow City and Rangers Women will play each other next Sunday, meaning if Celtic can grab a win over Motherwell, they could make up ground on one or both clubs.

Glasgow City have had a monopoly on this league for the longest time. It might be a step too far for the Hoops to overcome that dominance in just one full-time season but they are certainly giving it a go.

Rangers Women have also invested heavily in their team, more so than Celtic – if they can grab second spot, it would still be seen as a great season.
