Celtic are understood to be deep in negotiations to sign Albirex Niigata defender Hayato Inamura. Talks continue, with both clubs hopeful of reaching an agreement this summer.

Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Inamura maintained his impressive form for Niigata. He scored from a corner in their 3-2 defeat away to Avispa Fukuoka yesterday.

What is most interesting is the fact that he played the full 90 minutes at centre back, his preferred position this season, even though he has demonstrated versatility by playing at left back in the past.

Inamura has mostly played at centre back for Niigata this season and has become an important part of their defence. He’s known for staying calm under pressure, reading the game well, and being strong in the air. While centre back is his main role, he’s also comfortable at left back when needed, giving his team more options.

Celtic will likely see that versatility as a big plus, especially with the demands of competing on several fronts. Brendan Rodgers would be able to use him in different positions along the backline depending on the opposition or tactical setup.

If the deal goes through, it could be a smart piece of business for Celtic. Inamura, 23, is a young defender with international potential and experience in Japan. Signing him before the new season would give the squad more defensive options and increase competition for places.

With questions around the future of a number of defenders and a packed schedule ahead, Inamura would add much-needed depth. He’s also a threat from set-pieces, as shown by his goal from a corner, which could improve Celtic’s attacking threat from dead-ball situations.
