Brendan Rodgers made sure Colby Donovan enjoyed a moment to remember at Firhill after Celtic’s 4-0 win over Partick Thistle in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final.
Donovan, who only turned 18 recently, was handed another start at right-back as Rodgers continued to put his faith in the youngster.
It was not a flawless performance, Thistle looked to test him down his side, and he was caught out defensively on a few occasions, but he showed glimpses of his ability. The American almost added a spectacular first Celtic goal when he let fly with his left foot from outside the area, the ball narrowly clearing the bar.
Rodgers has spoken before about the importance of building confidence in young players, and the gesture at the final whistle summed that up.
By nudging Donovan forward to acknowledge the supporters, he ensured the defender was rewarded for his efforts on what was another big occasion in his development. The warm reception from the Celtic end will only boost his belief as he continues to learn his trade.
Donovan is still raw and has plenty of work ahead of him if he is to make the right-back spot his own. But his composure on the ball, willingness to step into midfield, and confidence to try his luck from distance suggest there is plenty for Rodgers to work with.
The Irishman clearly sees a future for him in the first team, and moments like this underline that he is determined to bring the youngster along at the right pace.
