Were Celtic denied a stonewall penalty in the Glasgow Derby clash on Sunday afternoon?

It was a pretty uneventful game, with just two goals in the match. However, The Rangers were lucky to finish with eleven men on the pitch and without conceding a penalty. Beaton showed the yellow card seven times throughout the match.

Jota made his way down the left before twisting and turning into the box. He was about to ease past Connor Goldson, but James Tavernier had other ideas. He barged into the side of Jota as he was gliding past, taking him out and made no contact with the ball. John Beaton has given softer penalties this season.

Watch it here;

The big thing for me is that he’s by Tavernier and is on his way past Goldson.

Beaton was in a brilliant position but yet played on without the slightest hesitation. There was no discussion about it at halftime or on the Sportscene extended highlight show. Again, you can say it was soft but when referees have been giving these out all season – should we feel a little bit aggrieved?

Had VAR been in operation, Celtic would’ve likely been awarded the penalty. But then again, it depends on who’s looking at VAR.
