Wales captured the imagination of Europe tonight as they blasted past Belgium to take their place in the semi-final of Euro 2016.

It’s really quite astonishing.

Wales were expected to bow out of the tournament early on but if that was the narrative, nobody told the Welsh players!

The side have not got to where they are by hook or by crook, they’ve played as a unit, a team with 11 men who are fighting for each other and a whole country whenever they take to the field. Some great team performances mixed in with some magic from Gareth Bale from time to time has seen this side 90 minutes away from a Euro Final. Extraordinary.

Everyone expected Belgium to stop this fairytale story in its tracks but they just couldn’t live with Wales in the second half, the team might have rode their luck with a pen decision late on but ultimately they deserved to go through.

We know this is a Celtic site and 99% of the time we will write about Celtic but something special happened tonight. The underdog story that has played out so many times, even with our own club, is coming to the forefront in this competition, and it’s very compelling.

Add Wales success to Iceland’s run so far and it most certainly has been a competition of the unexpected.

Wales winning the competition might seem like a step too far but in a season where we’ve seen Leicester City win the Premier league, is it really so outlandish?
