Johnny Kenny’s loan spell at Shamrock Rovers continues to impress, as the Celtic striker scored an equaliser in their 1-1 draw against Rapid Vienna in the UEFA Conference League.

The 20-year-old has now netted three goals in as many games in the competition, taking his tally to 18 goals across all competitions since rejoining the Dublin side earlier this year.

Kenny’s second-half strike salvaged an important point for Shamrock Rovers, maintaining their unbeaten record in the group stage. With eight points from four games, Rovers are on the verge of qualifying for the knockout stages. The Irish Mirror described their position as “all but certain.”

This European success has been a bright spot in what has otherwise been a mixed season for Rovers, who fell short in their domestic campaign, losing the League of Ireland title to former Celtic coach Damien Duff’s Shelbourne.

At Celtic, first-team opportunities have been limited have been limited. The young striker joined the Hoops in January 2022 from Sligo Rovers but struggled to break into the senior squad at Parkhead. His stint with Shamrock Rovers has provided valuable game time, helping him refine his skills in a competitive environment.

His performances, particularly in European competition, suggest he is developing the consistency and composure needed to compete at a higher level.

Celtic are looking for a third-choice striker this January; could Kenny be the answer?
