Liam Scales has been in strong form for Celtic this season, but his impact for Ireland tonight will go straight into the highlights reel of his career.

The defender played a key role in the opening goal as Ireland stunned Portugal 2–0 at the Aviva Stadium, rising highest from a corner and steering a brilliant header back across the box for Troy Parrott to finish.

Ireland started with real intent and showed no fear against a Portugal side expected to dominate the ball. The first breakthrough owed everything to Scales’ movement and timing. As the corner came in, he peeled off his marker, climbed above the crowd and directed a looping header into the danger area.

Parrott reacted fastest, powering home from close range to send the stadium wild. It was classic centre-half play: win your duel, put the ball where it hurts and let your striker do the rest.

The goal put Ireland in control, and momentum stayed with them. Parrott struck again just before half-time, capping off a superb individual display, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s dismissal on the hour for an elbow on Dara O’Shea summed up Portugal’s frustration. Ireland handled the pressure with maturity, defended their box bravely and threatened on the break whenever they could.

From a Celtic perspective, Scales’ contribution stood out. His aerial presence, calmness and reading of the game were all on show, and his assist came from exactly the kind of set-piece quality Celtic have leaned on in recent months. It was a reminder of his development and his growing influence on big occasions.

Former Hoops Mikey Johnston and Adam Idah both came off the bench to help see the game out, while Celtic striker Johnny Kenny remained an unused substitute. But the night belonged to the players who made the defining moments, and Scales was right at the heart of the first one.

This was a landmark win for Ireland and the kind of performance that can shift belief in a squad. Scales played his part with real assurance, delivering the perfect header to set Parrott on his way and helping to topple one of world football’s giants in Dublin.
