In a season where the mundane threatens to put us all into a coma there has been at least one player who has managed to keep us conscious. That player is Kris Commons!

With Celtic’s strikers misfiring on a weekly basis and the rest of the Midfield to scared to make a forward pass Kris has dragged the team kicking and screaming through more than a handful of matches. The St Mirren game was no different, if he wasn’t having a go then he was setting up his teammates. He is a player who could be having a bad game but could still change it in an instant.

It’s no coincidence when Kris isn’t playing well that the team suffers as a result. Scoring 17 goals so far this season he is our top goalscorer. Also managing to surpass 50 Celtic goals at the weekend, he really has proved to be a fantastic signing by Neil Lennon who brought him to the club from Derby for a measly 300k.

After the St Mirren game the gaffer was quick to praise the former Scotland international and even making comparisons between him and Lubo Moravčík –

“I know Lubo was a magician and Kris is a little bit more direct but he is dynamite with both feet.

“He is intelligent, his movement is very good and he is probably our best player, as Lubo was back in the day. He probably doesn’t have the natural skills Lubo had but he is certainly more of a goal threat”

While I’m not quick to make comparisons between the two there are some similarities.

Lennon has intimated that Celtic will be taking up the option of another year on the midfielders contract to keep him at Parkhead till the end of next season. Commons is now 30 but because his game has never relied on pace he will still be able to put in top quality for a few years yet.

What Celtic must do now is go out and find players to help him carry the load for the 2nd half of the season and beyond. Hopefully he will continue to add to his goal tally and a player of the year award awaits.

Hail Hail Kris Commons!
