JONNY HAYES is Celtic’s most used substitute of the season under Neil Lennon. The former Aberdeen man has been used as a utility player by the Celtic manager and even managed to score at Ibrox coming on from the bench.

However, Neil Lennon’s insistence on playing Jonny as much as he does highlights how much he lags behind the rest of the team.

You can’t take application and endeavour away from the player but there’s no getting away from the Irishman looking out his depth at times. It doesn’t help he gets played as a left back and he’s never a man for that position. Jonny will play anywhere his manager wants him to and that is to be commended.

Hayes is an average player in a Celtic team that’s flying and that’s why it’s so apparent. The lads around him are excelling where Jonny lags behind.

As a person and lad who is going to give you 110% you’re not going to find much better under those terms. However, I don’t want tot stray into patronising Jonny and I have to think there’s better options in the current squad to limit the Irishman’s time.

There’s a small band of fans who won’t see a bad word said about the player, and I get that – there’s a degree of self disgust in writing this but it has to be highlighted.

Greg Taylor wasn’t eligible for the game but going forward it would be wise to keep an actual left-back on the bench.

  1. This article clearly highlights that the writer does not Johnny, there is no getting away from that , it seems personal, and not an opinion I share . Hayes makes a valuable contribution to the team & squad, & is evidently a real team player, & more important than anything, the manager makes use of him because he obviously rates the player. That’s good enough for me . End of !

  2. You patronise him then say you dont ” want to patronise him. Johnny can be proud of his contribution to the hoops. Do one
