Nir Bitton has nearly been at Celtic for ten years. He’s had more ups than downs at the club for sure but popularity among the Celtic support has evaded the Israeli, for the most part.

The Celtic star has been used as a makeshift centre-back for years with the phrase ‘he does a job’ being used more often than not.

Bitton has flown under the radar for years and is the guy Celtic pull out when injuries pile up, especially in defence like they always seem to do.

This season, and more recently, Nir has been allowed to play in his most natural position at defensive mid and he’s turned a lot of heads.

Bitton came on for Turnbull in the first half of the cup final and put on a tremendous performance to help Celtic to victory. In other games where he’s played the role recently, he’s looked assured and confident in his own ability.

The player has gone from utility centre-back to a very useful option in the defensive midfield position for Ange.

Incredibly, the League Cup Final win was Nir’s 17th medal at Celtic since joining the club.

If the player continues in his role in the midfield and plays like he has recently, there’s a chance he can become a first team regular again.

It will be harder to get into this side once more deals are done in January, but the midfielder has put himself in a top osition.

Well done to him!

  1. I’ve always liked Bitton as a player when he’s played defensive midfield he looks a player, he’s been ok at best in defence. His temperament has let him and the side down at times with stupid sendings off. There’s no doubt the big man loves the club and he’s a Rolls Royce of a player on his day and when DT done his hamstring on Sunday I thought he played really well and gave CalMac the license to cover every blade of grass at Hampden. I’d like to see him get a new deal to finish his career at the club but I think Ange might have other ideas there. He’s a solid big guy and a thoroughly nice human being too.

  2. Good comment Tommy.
Personally, I am always happy when Nir is playing in the team and playing in his proper position as defensive midfielder. He is a quality player who has the gift of being able to split defences with his passing and he gives added assurance to the back four. Lennon misused him, as did others, which is unforgivable. I consider Nir to be an essential part of the midfield, allowing McGregor and Rogic to play further forward. These 3 are the best combination just now.

  3. If Anger believes in Nir as we do (and unless Nir wants to seek pastures new) He can fit in somehow. Give him a contract. And a testimonial too.
