Timo Weah came in under much fanfare in January. The son of golden boot winner Georgie Weah and top young PSG prospect – scoring on his debut against St Mirren and generally looking the part but since the highs of January, we have seen a gradual decline of Celtic’s use of the young star.
Since the managerial upheave, Celtic has played 270 minutes of football and Timo has only played 21 minutes of the Neil Lennon era. The American’s only full 90 minutes for the bhoys coming under Brendan Rodgers against Hibs at Celtic Park in early February.
There’s such a short window to let this young lad loose on games and see what he can do. There’s no doubt Celtic could ask and receive a positive response if they wanted Timo for the full of next season, BUT they won’t allow him back if he continues to be used sparingly.
We get there are players in front of him but Neil Lennon decided to make the double substitution at half time against Aberdeen and chose to bring on Mikey Johnstone instead of Timo was a strange one. Now the arguments are there; we should be bringing on our own talent etc. etc. But if you have a genuine talent on the bench who can make a real difference if given time, why wouldn’t you play him? Timo got the last 12 minutes against Aberdeen but could not turn the tide for the bhoys who looked out of ideas.
As we go into the business end of the season, is the player going to get the time to make a proper impact. He has the talent, desire and passion to be a success; he just needs someone to believe in him. He has already shown he can be a game changer with some late displays.
Since January, Timo has played 320 minutes of football, scoring three and assisting in one.
