It was June last year when Celtic plucked Kundai Benyu from Ipswich Town and brought him to Glasgow.

Brendan Rodgers had glowing reports about the young midfielder and brought him in with West Ham also vying for his signature.

The Celtic manager admitted that his plan was to loan Benyu straight back out in order to get first team development straight off the bat. However, after impressing in training the Irishman decided to keep the youngster at the club to personally oversee his short term development.

After getting a few run outs, it was clear the now 20-year-old was struggling and he was used in the developmental squad.

In January Rodgers went back to his original plan and loaned the young lad out to get vital first team football at Oldham. The English side were keen to get him in to help the teams fortunes, however, after just a handful of appearances Kundai quickly found himself on the bench.

Speaking to some Oldham players they believed that the Celtic loanee was a luxury player Oldham could not afford in their dogfight. Benyu has not seen any game time since early February and has even dropped out of the matchday squad altogether.

With very little first team experience, the youngster’s loan spell has been a disaster to the point he will be desperate to head back to Glasgow.

Brendan Rodgers must decide if Kundai can play a part in Celtic’s next campaign very quickly, if not, then Celtic must look at the best place where the 20-year-old can head out on-loan and actually receive game time.

At only 20 years of age, there is still a lot of time for growth and development but the summer will prove key to what Rodgers sees for the bhoy.

  1. Please don’t waste anymore time with him. We had him in the youth team at Ipswich, great skills and a pretty average attitude. Was booted out on loan to Aldershot (he did not want to go !!) Did really well in non-league for them and I think all Ipswich fans were gobsmacked when Celtic took him. His agent engineered the move for him but doubt you’ll see him to much in a Celtic shirt ever again. Aldershot may want him though.
