Wilfried Nancy is a serious candidate for the Celtic job, but if the club do go for him, it’s clear he’d need the right set-up behind the scenes to make it work.

His success at Columbus wasn’t down to big spending or superstar signings. It came from a joined-up structure, smart data use and a recruitment team that matched his football ideas. That’s the environment he thrives in.

Celtic, by contrast, are in the middle of another rebuild. With Antoine Lefèvre heading out of the scouting department this week, the club are light where it matters most. It’s the perfect moment to modernise. If Nancy walked into that without proper support, Celtic would be asking him to replicate MLS-level success in a system that still leans too heavily on tradition and improvisation.

Tony Bloom’s influence at Hearts is the clearest example of how far Scottish clubs can go when they lean into modern, data-driven thinking. Hearts have punched above their weight this season thanks to a scouting and analytics setup that actually matches the demands of the modern game. It’s the kind of model Celtic should have been leading years ago, and it shows exactly why a coach like Nancy would thrive with the right structure behind him.

And it’s worth remembering Nancy wasn’t doing this in a soft league either. He’s come up against Messi, Suárez and Busquets at Inter Miami, dealt with all the chaos that comes with star-powered MLS sides, and still kept Columbus competitive. That shows his coaching stands up against elite talent, even when he isn’t the one with the biggest names.

At Columbus he worked within a set-up that believed in long-term planning, backed analytics and didn’t panic in windows. If Celtic want Nancy’s high-risk football, his player-development strengths and his eye for undervalued talent, they’ll need something similar.

Bringing in one or two people from his Columbus circle, or at least making appointments with that same data-first, detail-driven mindset, would make a huge difference.

Celtic have the chance to build the kind of structure that stops these cycles of boom, bust and “start again next summer”. If Nancy arrives, he could be the catalyst. But he can’t do it alone. The board will need to match his ambition off the pitch with investment in people, processes and proper modern football operations.

If they get that right, Nancy would walk into a job built for him. If they don’t, they’d be taking a gamble on a manager whose biggest strength depends on the club giving him the tools he’s used to.
