Wilfried Nancy is refusing to accept that his job hinges on Saturday’s blockbuster Glasgow Derby clash, despite mounting pressure and a furious fanbase demanding change.
Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat to Motherwell has reignited calls for the Celtic boss to be sacked, with the champions now on a dire run of five losses in seven games and just two wins — both against 10-man Aberdeen and rock-bottom Livingston, who are yet to hit double digits in points.
With his team looking increasingly disjointed and unable to sustain performances across 90 minutes, the pressure has ramped up. But Nancy denies feeling the heat.
And he believes he can still turn things around in Glasgow.
Speaking to RecordSport, he said:
“No, not at all. Each game for me is important and for the team is important.
“I don’t think about my future, I think about what I do now and what I need to do to improve the team and what we need to do also to improve the team. And this is the way I think.”
Asked if he’s feeling under pressure, Nancy said: “As a manager, personally, this is not something that I want and this is not something that we want.
“In terms of pressure, it doesn’t change the way I think about this because we know that we have to do well. But for the moment, this is the reality and I knew that it could be like that.
“We had good games at certain moments. Tonight is a difficult one. The last game, the first half was really good. The second half could have been better. So this the reality.
“Am I confident I can turn things around? Yes, I’m confident. I had to make choices tonight regarding the team that I made and also we have a few players away regarding the situation.
“I’m confident with where we want to do, where we want to go. The reality is, for the moment, this is for this game. This was a tough game, it was difficult for us, for this game. But I think that we’re going to get better.”
It’s all well and good saying he needs his players and time to implement his system, but seven games in, he’s shown nothing to suggest that they are going to fix anything.
Celtic have the biggest and best squad in Scotland, despite the obvious need for some quality reinforcements, but the run they are currently on is embarrassing.
Saturday is a massive game, it looks like he will be in the dugout for that match, which could see Rangers draw level on points if they win at Parkhead.
