Celtic winger Mikey Johnston is eager to make up for lost time at the Hoops after his nightmare injury problems.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Johnston admitted it has been a frustrating past 12 months, missing a huge chunk of the 2020/21 campaign and is now looking to make up for that lost time under Ange Postecoglou.

“It’s been tough training, obviously getting used to the way the manager wants to work, but it’s been good, it’s been different, and it’s been a great week.

“Obviously, I’ve missed a lot of game-time recently, so it’s good to get the game-time into the legs again and just get the fitness – that’s what pre-season is for.

“Last year was hugely disappointing, but I’ve just got to pick myself up from where I was last year and just try to get going again. This year we want to be positive; we want to try and get on the front foot early doors and get going.

“Playing in Europe is what everyone wants – the fans all want us to be in Europe, so it could be a big bonus if we make the Champions League, and that’s what we all want to do.

“Last year, it was a huge miss not having the fans – no one can deny it, so this year it will be a huge lift to get everyone back in the stadium again and get a bit of normality again.

“As a winger, if you’re beating someone, it gives the fans a lift, it gives you confidence, and it can give the team confidence as well.”

The 22-year old has shown glimpses of what he is capable of as a tricky winger, but unfortunately, the majority of his time as a first-team player has been plagued by injury problems.

Hopefully, with the new manager coming in place, this can be seen as a new beginning for the academy graduate. He will be looking to establish himself as part of the squad regularly once again.

All Celtic fans love to see players progress from academy prospect to first-team regular, so fingers crossed this can be the year that Mikey finally gets over his injury problems and shows fans what he is capable of.
