STEPHEN WELSH is wanted by Italia side Udinese after breaking into the team just under 18 months ago. An initial bid, which was a loan with an option to buy, was rejected by Celtic.

The Italian side is set to return with another offer. Celtic have seemingly set their asking price at just £1.6 million, yes that is the correct figure according to Messaggero Veneto.

Surely this can not be right. Despite not being a starter for Celtic, Welsh plays a big part in the squad and adds great quality depth.

The Scotland Under-21 captain already is experienced in big games and a valuable asset to Postecoglou and his bhoys, especially if there are any suspensions or injuries in the centre of defence.

Other than Welsh, the only natural player in his position able to provide back-up is Jullien who is returning from over a year on the sidelines. Next in line would be Nir Bitton, however, it is safe to say he is not a defender. Celtic’s B side has Dane Murray who featured for Postecoglou early on in the Champions League Qualifiers but he is not at the level to contribute like Stephen Welsh.

Let’s hope Celtic’s valuation is not this low and Stephen Welsh can stay in Glasgow and continue playing the important role he fulfils.
