Can I start this by saying I am very disappointed that the SPFL chose to go against UEFA’s recommendation to close the window tonight and instead forced all clubs to have their business done by last Saturday night.

Idiotic move but are we really surprised?

We now find ourselves on the outside looking in as the rest of Europe joins in the excitement of deadline day. Instead of going to buy or even borrow some steak from the supermarket we find ourselves looking in the bargain bin with the yellow sticker items.

Of course the most fundamental part of today is to make sure we don’t lose anymore of our squad so I hope Peter Lawwell and the board have turned their blackberry’s off and thrown the fax machine out of the window.

While we cant buy anyone there are some players to be had and seeing as it’s deadline day it would be rude not to throw some names at you!

So here are a few players who Celtic could sign –

Carlton Cole – Striker (age 29)

Cole began his career at Chelsea in 2001, spending spells out on loan at Wolves, Charlton and Aston Villa before being transferred to West Ham United in 2006. He made his full international debut for the England national team on 11 February 2009 in a friendly match against Spain.  He is now currently a free agent after being let go by West Ham this summer. Is he the strong centre forward Celtic need?

Mladen Petric – Striker (age 32)

Mladen has previously played for Grasshopper, Basel, Borussia Dortmund, Hamburger SV and Fulham. He also has 45 caps for Crotatia scoring 13 goals. He was one of twelve players released by Fulham this summer and is now searching for a new club.

 Jay Simpson – Striker/Winger (age 24)

Jay is a product of the Arsenal Academy, he can play as a winger or striker. While at Arsenal he had loan spells at Milwall, West Brom and QPR. He was finally sold in the summer of 2010 to Hull City where he spent 2 and a half years before being loaned back to Milwall at the end of last season. He was released by Hull this summer.

André Bikey – Central Defender/ Right Back (age 28)

André  is a Cameroonian footballer who can play in the centre of defence or at right back. He has played for no fewer than 12 clubs in his career including Reading, Burnley and most recently Middlesbrough. He is now a free agent after being let go by Boro’ in the summer.

Stephen Hunt – Left Mid (age 32)

Hunt’s position is left midfield, although he can also play at left back and as an attacking midfielder. He previously played for Brentford, Crystal Palace, Reading, Hull City and Wolverhampton Wanderers. His younger brother, Noel Hunt currently plays for Leeds . He is now a fee agent and while he is 32 he could still do a job wherever he ends up.

David Bentley – Right Mid (age 29)

Touted as the next big thing when he was 21 the English midfielder has never been able to live up to his early career hype. Injuries and lack of first team oppertunities have seen him slip off the footballing radar. He started his career with Arsenal but joined rivals Spurs via Blackburn in 2008. He made 42 appearances for Spurs over a 5 year period being sent out on loan 4 timesas well. He now has been released at White Hart Lane and is looking to kick start his career.

Thomas Hitzlsperger -Centre Mid (age 31)

This boy seems to have been around forever but he is only 31. He has played for some very good teams such as Stuttgart, Lazio, Wolfsburg and most recently Everton. He has been capped over 50 times for Germany. He is now looking for a new club, could he be valuable experience in the Champions League?

These are just some of the players who find themselves without clubs. Other include Filip Sebo, Evander Sno, Derek Riordan and Badr El Kaddouri. Wonder if any of them are worth a punt…

@Creg1888

Could any of these players do a job at Celtic this season?
