TAM MCMANUS has urged Celtic to go out and find a new, better goalkeeper ahead of their next Champions League adventure.

The player turned pundit believes Joe’s reflexes and game is diminishing with age and that if Celtic want to make any sort of mark in Europe next season, the goalkeeping position should be a high priority.

McManus joked Celtic could replace Joe with a traffic cone in the SPFL because they’re such a dominant attacking force domestically.

He told PLZ that a new goalkeeper should be on the Parkhead transfer agenda this summer: “I think he’s good domestically but if Celtic want to do anything in the Champions League I don’t think he’s good enough.

“I think now you are starting to see it after that game (St Mirren) and I thought he was poor in the Old Firm game as well. For the first goal it’s low and he’s got get down and get that.

“Maybe it’s just a sign of him getting older and his reflexes are not as good. Domestically he is not tested. You could put a traffic cone in goal most of the time. For games in Europe and against Celtic I think they will be looking for an upgrade.”

The Joe Hart debate is an interesting one. He’s a good goalkeeper and he’s an even bigger personality in the dressing room. There will be lots of fans who get their back up about calling for Joe to be replaced because they like him as a person.

However, Ange has to be ruthless and if Celtic are to make inroads in the Champions League and Europe in general, we’re going to need a goalkeeper who can weather plants of storms next term.

What do you think? Can we get one or two more seasons out of Joe?

  1. The last few games I’ve thought Joe looked off it but so have the rest of the team so does that mean we change the full team. I went on PLZ this morning and pointed out that McManus is braindead and I’d take anything he says with a pinch of salt. If we sign a keeper I want one who’ll come out and command his box and take everything, managers these days want keepers to stay on their line and to be good at passing the ball. There was always going to be a time when Joe’s career was nearing an end at Celtic, he’s been great the last two seasons on and off the park but we’ve got to trust Ange to do what’s best for the team and there won’t be any sentiment involved in his decision that’s for sure.
