The Liverpool Echo told their readers earlier today Celtic would not be considered if they are to send Harry Wilson out on-loan this season.

The reasoning behind this decision is the Echo pointing to Celtic’s Charly Musonda deal, where the player cut his loan short because he failed to breakthrough to the first team straight away.

It’s highly unlikely that Liverpool is that in tune with what’s going on over at Celtic that Charly Musonda’s name would have even come up when considering the pros and cons of sending the 21-year-old to Celtic.

The Echo did say Liverpool are keen to get a guarantee the player will play a significant first team role from whatever club does land the Welshman.

If correct, this is where the deal would fall apart for BOTH parties.

While some clubs and managers would be happy to take that directive in order to land a talented player, it’s not the way Celtic and most importantly Brendan Rodgers do business.

We can cite the Charly Musonda deal as proof of this, if the manager doesn’t think you’re ready for his first team then he won’t give you the time of day.

Be patient, work your arse off and maybe, just maybe you would get a chance to shine.

Musonda seemed disillusioned and perplexed by his first team exclusion, thinking a player coming from Chelsea would instantly command a spot in an already succesful team.

That’s all down to attitude.

Case and point – Odsonne Edouard rarely played his first four months at the club and even when he did play and managed a hat trick on one outing, it was back to the bench for the striker. The Frenchman showed graft and determination to succeed at the club and ultimately made his mark in the dying embers of last season.

Having shown what he could do, Celtic and Brendan Rodgers broke the bank to bring the bhoy in on a permanent basis. There was no demand from PSG to play the player last season and Rodgers put him in the side when he felt the big man was most needed.

We cannot allow ourselves to be dictated to by other clubs at the risk of burying our own talent.

Harry Wilson is a player who could make the grade at Celtic but the compulsion to play him over a Sinclair, Forrest, Christie, Morgan or even Mikey Johnston just doesn’t sit well with me.

If Liverpool don’t believe Harry is good enough to organically break through into the Celtic team or any side for that matter, what does that say about the confidence they have in their player.

Celtic have sent out many players on-loan hoping they will see action but never demanding. Kundai Benyu got sent to Oldham during the second half of last season only to make less than a handful of appearances – it happens.

If the Liverpool directive is true then it does make Celtic’s decision to walk away without a deal much easier.

This is Brendan Rodgers third pre-season at Celtic and he will know the score when it comes to getting players in the door. Some deals just can’t be done and the Irishman is pragmatic enough to accept that it’s not always going to be possible to get all the player’s on his wishlist.

  1. Sorry but you just don’t seem to have a clue Liverpool have a number of talented youngster hat would walk into the starting line ups of many a team they have a problem in that Mane and Salah are two of the very best at what they do and the gulf between under 23 football and the top 4 of the Prem is marked so Liverpool have players like Wilson and Woodburn who they need to be playing competitive first team football these players are full internationals so Liverpool will let them go out on loan to teams who will play them in 80 90% of available games or in other words if you like what you see and you want them in your team then Liverpool will let you have the loan of the players for a nominal loan fee where by you get to have a player you normally wouldn’t be able to have playing in your team now Liverpool have no intention of selling the likes of Wilson Woodburn, or Brewster etc at this stage of there development but for the benefit of player and Club these clauses are made known at the outset if you don’t want to honour them then the player isn’t for you simple as that but what you are failing to grasp is that Liverpool Football Club has a major undertaking at Rangers and its more likely that this is the case for them coming out and saying Celtic wont be considered it hasn’t been confirmed and its just my opinion that Rangers will be used as Liverpool’s Feeder club for the next few years were by Liverpool will let these youngsters move to Rangers in a two fold role one helping Rangers to challenge the Dominance of Celtic in Scottish football from the start of this season and give the young talent an opportunity to progress to the point they are ready for first team duties at Anfield as a Celtic supporter you should be really worried because you are about to have a new team arrive in Scottish football one you have never seen before but you will know its name only to well and Celtic will have a real fight on there hands in the next few seasons and might just lose the grip they have had for so long on Scottish football and this is from a Celtic loving Liverpool fan

    • 1) Doesn’t matter how good a player is. If his attitude is wrong or the manager doesn’t think he is ready to play in the first team than that is his decision, not the loaning club. That is the point being made in the above article. Celtic will not be dictated to by Liverpool or anyone else.

      2) You’re right about one thing, there is a new team in Scottish Football. Well, new-ish at going on 6 years old.

      3) Liverpool have no “major undertaking” at Rangers*. They’ve palmed off a potentially dud coach and thrown him some scraps for old times’ sake. They don’t care about “helping Rangers* challenge the Dominance of Celtic”, they just care about giving their young squad player/s some experience. It doesn’t affect Liverpool if Rangers* win the league and Liverpool know they absolutely will not so it’s in no way a consideration.

      4) Bad grammar I can take but for the love of God learn what a bloody full stop is for!

      5) Celtic-loving? My erse.

    • Sorry. You are wrong. If you have a player who is not prepared to put in the hard work and break into the first team, you have a player with a bad attitude.

A lot of these youngsters get too much, too quickly. The hunger is diluted. Mosunda was a prime example of that.

As for your point about ‘Rangers’ being a feeder club, I doubt very much that Gerrard will actually be head coach by the time Christmas roles around.

    • Why should we be worried, don’t you think we will be strengthening an already stronger team than rangers? You’ll forgive me for having a laugh, but we have heard this crapl many times before, it will come one day ( if they are still around) the law of averages will see to that, but not anytime soon I fancy.

  2. Delighted this approach has been rebuked. Would rather see Mikey Johnston or Calvin Miller get a proper run, rather than work for the benefit of the English Premier League cash cow clubs by taking some of their unwanted fringe players on loan whose names the first team manager there barely even knows. Roberts was an exceptional success, rather than the general rule, and even he was pretty poor last season playing nowhere near his potential. Hate watching players on loan at Celtic, feel it weakens and dilutes the prestige of the club. It is also extremely defeatist and so short term-ist. The only way I would do this would be to use the Spanish league clubs’ approach taking young players from Real and Barcelona of actually buying the player for £3-7m on a 3 year deal, with the club they are coming from having a £10-15m buy-back clause – this is almost like a hybrid between a loan and a signing. HH

  3. It’s just another example of this so called superior EPL trying to Lord it over our SPL if the lads want to play for our great club then they have to put the work in instead of thinking I’m on Liverpool or Chelsea books I’ll walk into this team. I agree it’s an attitude problem from the likes of Liverpool or Chelsea and the player involved. Who do they think they are? They should count themselves lucky Celtic have even shown interest.
