Kris Boyd has taken several digs at Celtic ahead of Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup clash with Rangers at Ibrox, questioning the club’s transfer business before backing Derek McInnes’ side to win the derby.
Boyd questioned whether Martin O’Neill had been given his new arrivals early enough.
He said: (The Warm-Up), “Have they brought in, did they bring a lot of players in at the right time?”
That followed Celtic’s failure to reach the Champions League, with several additions arriving late in the window.
Boyd also suggested another defeat could quickly bring that frustration back to the surface.
He said: “If Martin was to lose it as well, then Celtic fans will be, you know, because you’re back to a Champions League game and, yes, an unbelievable start in the league, but you’re knocked out a cup, then all of a sudden, you know, the negativity starts there again.”
He then added: “The Celtic board will get it in the neck.”
Boyd was not finished there.
During a discussion over Nico Raskin’s transfer value, he aimed a cheeky swipe across the city at the fees regularly attached to Celtic players.
“You always put another 10 million,” he said.
“To be fair, you put another 10 million atop it, then seem to get 10 million when you move them on.”
Whatever Boyd thinks of Celtic’s valuations, the Hoops have built a strong record of generating substantial transfer fees from player sales in recent years. That was shown again this summer when Celtic banked £22 million for Arne Engels, while Rangers were unable to attract anything close to that figure for Raskin despite interest in the midfielder.
The pundit also believes Rangers are heading into the cup meeting in a much better position than they were following their European exit.
“They’re definitely in a far better place than what they were after that European game,” Boyd said.
He believes knocking Celtic out could change the mood around McInnes’ side considerably.
“If Derek can go and, you know, knock Celtic out the cup, then all of a sudden Rangers would be favourites to win, you know, a trophy.”
Boyd eventually went one step further and backed Rangers to do exactly that.
“I’m going to say 2-1 Rangers.”
Sutton went the other way, predicting Celtic to progress 3-2 after extra-time.
For all Boyd’s digs, Celtic head into the tie after an excellent domestic start, while even the former Rangers striker acknowledged McInnes has been under pressure following their difficult opening weeks.
Sunday will give Boyd’s latest prediction a fairly immediate test.
