Former Celtic striker Dion Dublin believes Frank Lampard and Sean Dyche are the only two managers who could replace Martin O’Neill when the Irishman eventually leaves Parkhead.
O’Neill signed a one-year deal with Celtic during the summer, with an option for a further year, after twice stepping in to rescue the club during the second half of last season.
The 74-year-old has made an excellent start to his latest spell in charge, particularly domestically, with Celtic’s last league defeat coming back in March.
The Hoops have won all five of their Premiership matches this season and travel to face St Johnstone tonight looking to maintain their perfect record.
Naturally, attention has already started to turn towards what comes next for Celtic, particularly given O’Neill’s age and the fact that his current contract only runs until the end of the season, with an option attached.
Dublin, however, believes there are only two managers who could realistically step into the role once O’Neill decides his time at Parkhead is over.
“There isn’t anyone who is perfect to replace Martin O’Neill and that’s the problem for Celtic,” Dublin said to Reviant.
“You’ll only find the perfect person once they’re at the club and have proven they can win everything and done everything the way you’d want them to. That’s the issue.
“A lot of people will look at Celtic and say: are you joking? It’s a massive club and a massive job. They fear the size of the football club. They fear the expectations of the football club.
“I want Frank Lampard to stay at Coventry City but he’s the kind of manager from the new generation who wouldn’t be fazed by it.
“What’s up with someone like Sean Dyche at Celtic? I think that might work perfectly for all parties once Martin decides to go and hang his boots up. Sean Dyche is a big character and a very good manager.”
Lampard is currently in charge of Coventry City, while Dyche has extensive Premier League experience having managed the likes of Burnley and Everton.
Out of the two, Lampard is probably the better pick, but Celtic should cast their net wider and let Dublin stick to Homes Under the Hammer.
