Celtic Eye £4m Goalkeeper

Celtic are considering Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Balázs Tóth as they look to strengthen between the sticks before the transfer window closes.

The Hungarian is one of several options on the club’s radar, with Celtic still weighing up how much they are prepared to spend on a new No.1.

Journalist Alan Nixon reports on his Patreon that Tóth is keen on a move away from Blackburn after turning down a new contract at Ewood Park.

That situation has opened the door for interested clubs, with Celtic among those keeping a close watch on the 28-year-old.

Blackburn are believed to value Tóth at around £3million to £4million, but Celtic are not currently thought to be willing to reach that figure.

That gap in valuation is the main issue at this stage.

Celtic could still look for a structure that suits both clubs, potentially by lowering the initial payment and building more money into the deal through bonuses.

There is no suggestion, though, that a transfer is close.

Contact so far is understood to have taken place through intermediaries, rather than through direct negotiations between Celtic and Blackburn.

The English side are open to doing business, while Tóth’s contract position means his future is likely to remain a talking point until the end of the window.

For Celtic, the decision will come down to whether they see enough value in pushing harder for Tóth or whether they move on to another name.

The club are also looking at cheaper goalkeeping options, so there is no guarantee the Blackburn man will end up as the preferred choice.

Viljami Sinisalo remains part of Martin O’Neill’s plans, but Celtic are clearly looking to add more competition in goal.

The Hoops have raised a significant amount of money through Arne Engels’ move to West Ham, but that does not mean they will simply meet every asking price put in front of them.

Tóth is therefore one to watch, but Celtic still have a decision to make over how far they are prepared to go to bring him to Glasgow.
