Shim Mheuka was denied his first Celtic goal after VAR intervened, and he’s now weighed in on the decision.
Mheuka came off the bench to make his second appearance since arriving on-loan from Chelsea. Like his first cameo role, the 18-year-old looked sharp and made life difficult for the opposition backline.
Benjamin Nygren played the striker through on goal, and the on-field decision was a goal. VAR called the referee over to the monitor; however, they couldn’t put a line on St Mirren defender Alex Gogic to definitively show the offside call.
It sparked much debate post-match, particularly given the on-field decision was that the goal should have stood.
Mheuka has had his own say, but has steered clear of getting into a discussion about any match officials or VAR:
“To have a goal chalked off is never nice. It’s football, it happens.
“At the time I felt it was a goal, you could see in my celebrations. There’ll be plenty more opportunities in the coming games, hopefully, for me to score.
“When you come on, you want to try and take that one opportunity that might come to you. Ultimately, I’ll get chances.” (via Celtic Player)
The teenager remained professional and instead kept the topic of conversation on opening his Celtic scoring account.
Supporters have only seen him in action for a combined 22 minutes, but he looks like a striker who will continue to threaten given his sharpness and style.
He’s likely to be given more game time on Wednesday night as the Hoops face a trip to Perth to take on St Johnstone. Camilo Duran will likely remain first pick, but Mheuka has shown to be a stable deputy in Kasper Hogh’s absence.
Hogh has returned to training and could be involved. Though given the busy schedule facing The Celts, he may not be rushed back ahead of Sunday’s League Cup quarter-final at Ibrox.
