Martin O’Neill has expressed his delight after Celtic youngster Colby Donovan earned his first call-up to the senior Scotland squad.
Reports on Tuesday morning suggested the right-back was in line for international recognition following his impressive start to the season.
Those reports were confirmed at lunchtime when new Scotland head coach Sébastien Pocognoli named Donovan in his first squad.
The 19-year-old is one of seven uncapped players selected for the upcoming Nations League fixtures. He has been rewarded after establishing himself in O’Neill’s Celtic side while deputising for the injured Alistair Johnston.
Pocognoli’s appointment offers Scotland an opportunity to introduce new blood and assess players who may not have received a chance under Steve Clarke.
Donovan is among the most exciting additions. The academy graduate has looked increasingly comfortable with every Celtic appearance, earning praise for his attitude and performances.
O’Neill believes the call-up is fully deserved.
“I am delighted for him, absolutely delighted,” the Celtic manager said to CelticPlayer. “He’s got a massive heart. There are obviously parts of his game that he can tidy up, which he is willing to do.
“He’s a great character as well too. He never seems to be down at all, and always has that proverbial smile on his face.
“Coming in to training, Colby wants to work hard, he wants to learn, and this is great for him, really great.
“Genuinely, it’s the icing on the cake, isn’t it really? And with Scotland qualifying now for competitions, it would be great to be involved with that.
“But it’s a big lift, and that will give him a big boost of confidence as well.”
Donovan has previously represented Scotland at youth level but will now have the opportunity to impress Pocognoli in the senior setup.
The Celtic defender has been included for Scotland’s four-match Nations League window, which begins away to Slovenia on September 26. Matches against Switzerland, North Macedonia and Slovenia will follow. The Scottish FA confirmed the full 28-man squad.
Donovan still has plenty to improve, as O’Neill acknowledged, but his character and performances have earned him this chance. It’s always good to see a young player rise through the ranks and earn some international recognition.
