Celtic winger Yang Hyun-jun has been selected to represent South Korea at Under-23 level, despite claims this week that Rangers’ new hero Min-Su Kim should have been picked ahead of him.

Kim has played just one game for Rangers since arriving at Ibrox, but his debut has already seen plenty of excitement build around the youngster from certain quarters of the media.

Some this week suggested that the 18-year-old should be selected ahead of Yang for South Korea’s upcoming tournament.

Nothing like getting carried away.

Admittedly, I didn’t watch Rangers’ first win of the season at the weekend, but judging by the praise Derek Ferguson was dishing out to Kim on BBC Sportsound during and after the game, I had to check they hadn’t signed Lionel Messi.

South Korea Under-23 manager Lee Min-sung has now confirmed his squad, with Yang included.

The Celtic winger will join up with the squad at the weekend and travel directly to Japan for the tournament following Celtic’s game against St Mirren. Yang will then miss a huge chunk of games.

That means Yang will miss both upcoming Glasgow Derby clashes against Rangers, with the Premier Sports Cup meeting followed by the league encounter.

Lee explained that the coaching staff held extensive discussions before deciding on their final squad.

“We held dozens of meetings with the coaching staff and we have selected players who fit our team,” he said.

“These players have the strength to definitely win a gold medal. I apologise to the players who were not selected, but I have very high expectations for the remaining players.

“And it would be disrespectful to the players who were not selected if I were to discuss each one individually here.”

Lee also singled out Yang for praise, highlighting the Celtic winger’s ability in one-on-one situations.

“Yang Hyun-jun has strong one-on-one abilities on both flanks,” he said to the Glasgow Times.

“I have been keeping a close eye on that aspect and selected him to utilise his abilities.”

Yang has made a positive start to the season under Martin O’Neill and will now have the chance to impress on the international stage.

For all the early hype surrounding Kim after one Rangers appearance, South Korea’s Under-23 boss has opted for the Celtic winger when it comes to his squad.
