Celtic have confirmed the signing of Joel van den Berg from PSV in a deal worth around £3.4million.

The midfielder has signed a four-year contract with the option of a further year, tying him to the club as Martin O’Neill continues to reshape his squad after a frantic end to the transfer window.

Van den Berg had been on Celtic’s radar in the final week of the window, with talks held with PSV and a member of the Hoops delegation travelling to Eindhoven as the move began to gather pace.

The 19-year-old was left out of Jong PSV’s squad to face RKC Waalwijk as negotiations progressed, with PSV valuing the midfielder at around €4million.

CeltsAreHere reported last week that Celtic were closing in on an agreement, with Van den Berg keen on the move to Glasgow. A medical was then booked, before the midfielder completed checks in London and travelled north to finalise the transfer.

Speaking to CelticPlayer after signing for Celtic, Van den Berg said: “It feels amazing and I’m very excited to start.

“I’m very excited to meet the rest of the team and to train with them and, obviously, I want to play many games and show myself to the fans.

“I want to show the best version of myself and develop as a player and also as a person, of course, and just make the fans proud.

“I’m a box-to-box midfielder. I also run back, but I also go forward. I think I put a lot of intensity in my game. I also have the ability to provide assists and also score goals. I think I have a lot of power in the duals, have good physicality, so I’m strong. I think that describes me as a midfielder.

“Celtic is a very big club and they have to be champions. So playing for the champions is, I think at this age, a very big step for me and very important.”

Van den Berg arrives as another midfield option following Arne Engels’ move to West Ham, with Celtic moving quickly to add fresh legs and physicality in that area of the pitch.

O’Neill had said after Celtic’s win over Aberdeen that a few papers still needed signed, but made clear the club wanted the player and needed him. That paperwork is now complete, and Van den Berg is officially a Celtic player.
