Celtic’s pursuit of Gvidas Gineitis has collapsed, with CeltsAreHere understanding there is now no chance of an agreement being reached with Torino.
The Lithuanian midfielder had been on Celtic’s radar for much of the summer, and Martin O’Neill was keen to bring him to Glasgow as part of the club’s midfield rebuild.
No personal terms were agreed with the player, and Michael Nicholson did not proceed in negotiations in a way that put Celtic in position to close the deal.
That will raise further questions over Celtic’s transfer approach, particularly after a summer where key business has dragged into the final stages of the window.
Gineitis was viewed as a player who could add energy, quality and long-term value to the middle of the park. He had already featured for Torino this season, and the Serie A club were never likely to let him leave without the right structure being put forward.
The Irishman is believed to have told the board that Celtic would be in the Champions League had a couple of the new players already signed been brought in earlier.
It is a blunt assessment, but one that reflects the frustration around the club’s summer business. Celtic have since added players, but the timing has been a recurring issue.
Gineitis now looks set to remain out of reach, despite being a player O’Neill wanted. The deal was there to be pushed properly, but Celtic did not get close enough when it mattered.
