Martin O’Neill has confirmed Celtic have made Kelechi Iheanacho an offer as talks continue over a return to Glasgow.
The Nigerian striker is currently a free agent after his previous Celtic contract expired at the end of June.
Speaking to the Daily Record, O’Neill said: “There’s an offer there to him at this minute. So we’ll see how that develops.”
Iheanacho originally joined Celtic in September 2025 on a one-year deal, with the club holding an option to keep him for a further season. Celtic did not activate that option before it expired, meaning the two sides must now agree a completely new contract.
There has been no confirmation of the wages or length of the new proposal, and it would be wrong to claim Celtic have offered Iheanacho a reduced deal without firm information.
However, his fitness record and limited number of starts last season are likely to be part of the wider discussion.
Iheanacho’s campaign was disrupted by injury, and he rarely completed a full match. He was often used from the bench rather than being asked to lead the attack for 90 minutes.
Despite that, he regularly made an impact when called upon.
The forward scored important goals during the closing weeks of the campaign and played his part as Celtic secured the league and Scottish Cup Double.
His ability to come into matches and produce decisive moments gave O’Neill another option during a difficult run-in.
That late contribution helps explain why the manager wants him back, even though Celtic chose not to take up the original extension.
A fresh agreement would allow the club to judge the deal on where Iheanacho stands now, rather than simply continuing under the terms agreed when he arrived last September.
From the player’s side, the decision will come down to whether Celtic’s proposal matches what he wants at this stage of his career.
He would already know the manager, the squad and the demands of playing in Glasgow. That could make a return easier than starting again elsewhere, particularly with pre-season already under way.
O’Neill will want the situation settled quickly.
Camilo Duran has already joined the attack, but Celtic still need enough depth to deal with a demanding start to the season.
Iheanacho showed last term that he can provide goals, even when he is not starting every week.
The offer is now on the table. Celtic must wait to discover whether the striker is prepared to return under a new agreement.
