When Celtic were searching for a new manager this summer, there was one candidate just 20 minutes down the road who plenty of supporters felt would have been an obvious choice.
Jens Berthel Askou had just guided Motherwell to fourth place in the Scottish Premiership, securing European football for the Fir Park club in the process.
The 43-year-old had impressed during his time in charge, with the quality of football produced by his Motherwell side attracting interest from elsewhere.
Toulouse eventually won the race for his signature, with Askou making the move to France after leaving Scotland.
But there had been plenty of speculation linking him with the Celtic job at the end of last season.
CeltsAreHere understood at the time that Askou would have been keen on taking over at Parkhead, but Celtic never made a formal approach for the former Motherwell boss.
Now, Askou has finally addressed the speculation surrounding his future during his final weeks in Scotland.
The Dane was asked about the opportunities that may have been available to him following his impressive campaign with Motherwell.
“I don’t want to talk about what other opportunities there might have been,” Askou said on Open Goal.
“I will let people speculate about that. I am here now, and I am happy about that. I feel it’s a very good decision I have made.”
Askou has since taken on a very different challenge with Toulouse, although the start to life in France has been difficult.
Toulouse have picked up just one point from their opening three Ligue 1 matches, having faced Lyon, Brest and Lille.
While the early results haven’t gone their way, Askou is now focused on building something of his own in France.
