Martin O’Neill believes Kasper Høgh will become a “big player” for Celtic – but supporters may have to wait a few weeks to see the striker hit his best form.
Høgh has endured a slightly underwhelming start to life at Parkhead after arriving from Norway during the summer, although there have been enough glimpses of his quality to suggest there is plenty more to come.
The striker has shown good link-up play with his teammates and has demonstrated an ability to hold the ball up, but goals have been harder to come by since his hat-trick against Kilmarnock.
That should not be taken as a sign that Celtic have a problem with their summer signing, with O’Neill confident Høgh will become an important player for the Hoops.
The Celtic boss is expecting the forward to really step things up after the international break and revealed he had not realised just how much football Høgh had played before making the move to Glasgow.
Høgh featured in 12 matches during the Norwegian season before joining Celtic in July, scoring seven goals and providing four assists.
That workload could help explain why the 25-year-old has taken some time to find his rhythm in Scotland.
O’Neill said: “By the time we then come back from the international break, Kasper will be a big player for us.
“In all honesty, I hadn’t realised how many games he had played prior to joining us due to how the season works over in Norway.” [RecordSport]
The international break could therefore provide Høgh with a timely opportunity to reset before returning to Celtic ready for the next stage of the season.
With a hectic run of fixtures ahead and European football to come, O’Neill will need the Danish striker firing – and he clearly believes that time will come.
