Reo Hatate made his Burnley debut at the weekend and, on a personal level, the former Celtic midfielder could hardly have asked for a much better introduction.
Hatate completed his move to Turf Moor on deadline day and was unavailable for Burnley’s midweek fixture, but he was thrown straight into the starting XI for Saturday’s Championship clash with Bristol City.
The Japan international started in the No.10 role and immediately showed the qualities that made him such a key player during his time at Celtic.
Hatate provided the assist for Burnley’s opener in the 56th minute, helping his new side take a 1-0 lead on home soil.
His afternoon was cut short seven minutes later, however, when he was substituted in the 63rd minute.
Unfortunately for Hatate and Burnley, the home side could not see the game out.
Bristol City struck in the 82nd minute to level before completing a dramatic comeback in the 91st minute to steal all three points.
Burnley had been in front for just over half an hour but ended the afternoon empty-handed.
Despite the disappointing result, Hatate’s individual numbers made for encouraging reading.
The former Celtic star completed 20 accurate passes and created two chances for his new side, while also contributing defensively during his time on the pitch.
It was therefore a positive first outing for Hatate personally, even if Burnley will be wondering how they managed to surrender the three points at home.
Hatate will now look to build on his debut as he settles into life at Turf Moor, with Burnley hoping the creativity he showed against Bristol City can help them climb the Championship table, currently rooted to the bottom.
