Reo Hatate appears set to leave Celtic before the transfer window closes, with the midfielder finally in line to secure his desired move before the deadline tomorrow.

The Japan international has made no secret of his desire to move to one of Europe’s top five leagues, but he now has less than 48 hours to get his move before the window slams shut.

Hatate missed Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Falkirk at the weekend after Martin O’Neill revealed he had picked up a knock in training.

The Japan international had made two appearances from the bench against LASK in the Champions League qualifier, prompting some chat online that he could yet remain at Celtic Park. O’Neill had also refused to completely close the door on Hatate’s Celtic career.

However, it has been increasingly clear throughout the summer that Hatate’s preference has been to move on.

The midfielder is determined to test himself in one of Europe’s top five leagues and has rejected opportunities elsewhere during the transfer window.

A move to the Greek league or the English Championship was not viewed as the level Hatate was targeting, with the 28-year-old believing he can compete at a higher level.

And it now appears he could finally get his wish before the deadline.

The destination remains unclear, although The Herald’s Stephen McGowan has provided an update on Celtic’s plans for the final days of the window.

McGowan reports that Celtic are expected to complete a deal for 19-year-old PSV midfielder Joel van den Berg as a replacement for Arne Engels, while Hatate is also expected to leave before the deadline.

He also reports that Hatate’s departure would create room for Celtic to bring in another midfielder.

Celtic have already been linked with a number of midfield targets as they look to reshape the position following the departures of Engels and potentially Hatate.

His form dipped during the past season and he struggled to produce the same level of performances which had made him one of the standout midfielders in Scotland.

That contributed to him falling down the pecking order, but there is little doubt over the impact he has had in the Hoops.

Hatate has been a brilliant player for Celtic since arriving from Kawasaki Frontale and has played a significant role in the club’s domestic success.

Now, it appears the next chapter is about to begin.
