KRIS COMMONS makes his money these days by being hyper-critical of his former club on a regular basis.

This week, it’s the turn of Leigh Griffiths to get it in the neck. Instead of being delighted with his former teammates game winning return, he quickly shuts him down and believes he has not been forgiven for his fitness woes at the start of this season.

Leigh was left behind during Celtic’s pre-season four of France because he had shown up unfit and overweight. The striker has spent the past two months getting up to speed with injury hampering his progress at times.

Coming on as a late sub on Sunday, he stole all three points with his instinctive finishing but Commons doesn’t want to celebrate that just yet.

“For me, when he’s fit and firing, he’s the best finisher in Scottish football by a mile.” Commons told SunSport.

“It would be foolish, however, to believe that all is forgiven and forgotten on the basis of one goal against St Johnstone. After all, one swallow doesn’t make a summer.

“How Celtic could have done with Griffiths’ talents up front in the Champions League qualifier against Ferencvaros. But Lennon made it clear he was patently unfit for duty.

“Listen, I’m a massive fan of Griffiths. He’s got an absolute wand of a left foot and he’s one of the greatest goalscorers in Celtic’s history.

“But it feels like his career has been stuck on a loop for years now. It’s vitally important to separate his personal problems when talking about this.

“I’ve got nothing but respect for the way he has fought his way back after suffering from some very serious off-field issues.

“But that’s not what we’re talking about here. This is about his long-standing fitness problems, accusations that he’s unprofessional and the way he seems to fall off the wagon every so often.”

If Leigh can help fire Celtic to ten in a row, there will not be one supporter who will care about his pre-season shortcomings. It’s time to help build Leigh up, because a confident Leigh Griffiths is a dangerous proposition in front of goal.

With less than two weeks to the first Glasgow Derby of the season, could we see an Edouard Griffiths partnership again?
