Andy Walker has pinpointed the ideal midfield trio for Celtic in the upcoming Glasgow Derby at Ibrox, highlighting the importance of Callum McGregor’s potential return to the lineup.
McGregor’s participation remains uncertain due to an Achilles/ankle injury, but his recovery and possible return to training this week could be a game-changer for the Hoops.
Tomoki Iwata has commendably filled the void left by McGregor, demonstrating the depth and talent within the squad. However, Walker believes that the experience and familiarity of McGregor with such high-stakes matches make him an indispensable choice if fit.
Walker suggests a midfield composition of McGregor, Matt O’Riley, and Reo Hatate as Celtic’s strongest configuration. This trio combines experience, tactical awareness, and creativity, qualities that could be pivotal in a derby known for its fine margins.
McGregor’s leadership and ability to dictate the tempo of the game, paired with O’Riley’s dynamism and Hatate’s technical skills, could provide Celtic with the balance and creativity needed to challenge Rangers on their home turf.
Walker said on Go Radio: “If he is fit it is a big boost and bonus for Celtic. He has been there, seen it and done it. He knows how to handle these occasions.
“He has a tremendous relationship with O’Riley. If Hatate is back fit – and I think he is after his hour last weekend – then I am sure he will play. But If Callum McGregor is fit, he has been over this course before, I think Brendan Rodgers would want to start with those three; McGregor, O’Riley and Hatate.”
Would be most supporters choice for a midfield 3 to start against the scum?
However starting with 2 out of 3 midfielders not going to be 100%fit for the intensity the Derby match brings with it?
So potentially a massive risk to be taken?
Wouldn’t have any problems with iwata starting in the holding midfield role, and allowing for potentially Hatate and calmac sharing the left midfield attacking position, with Oreily and Paulo with the right attacking midfield roles?
If calmac shouldn’t make it, then always young Kelly could possibly do the calmac role for this game, but would be a bit concerned if the game could be to big for young Kelly, at this current time within his Celtic career?
Could well be a massive ask for iwata, but personally believe he could handle the occasion, especially when question marks currently will be regarded calmac fitness, if he’s even fit at all?
A fully fit calmac does start without doubt, and iwata drops to the bench possibly?
Not totally convinced that it would be the best option for Sunday as things currently stand imo?
