Brendan Rodgers heaped praise on Filip Benkovic for his time at Celtic but admits his loan defender hasn’t hit the heights he’s capable of since the first ten games he played in the Hoops.

Filip was part of the treble treble side and was brought in by Brendan Rodgers as the Celtic manager. The Irishman and Croatian would meet again the following summer at Leicester with Filip hoping his exploits for the bhoys would see him make the breakthrough.

He’s been sent out on two loans to this point and now he’s struggling to get a game for Cardiff.

Rodgers spoke to SunSport about the player and what he needs to have a chance at Leicester. Speaking about the players early form for Celtic, Rodgers praised Filip for the game against Leipzig but admits his fitness hasn’t been there.

“It’s something where we need to get Filip playing. He needs to get working again and show the level he can play at.

“Thankfully for myself, I’ve seen the level. When he was with me at Celtic he played against RB Leipzig and he was sensational.

“Really since that first 10 games at Celtic, he hasn’t maintained a level of fitness and performance that I know he can.

“Hopefully for him he can get playing again and if it’s not going to be at Cardiff in the longer term, then we’ll look at it from there.”

Neil Lennon had a brief period managing Filip and at one point said he’d love to see the defender back at the hoops. Since then, he’s fallen off the radar. While Celtic are in the market for a centre-back in January, it’s unlikely they’ll look to Benkovic to fill that gap.
