NOEL WHELAN believes that Celtic can benefit from Kyogo Furuhashi’s call up to the Japan national side.

After the confusion of whether or not Kyogo would represent his country, this international break retired footballer Noel Whelan says that Celtic can “reap the benefits” of his call up.

Kyogo will be part of the squad that faces Australia and Saudi Arabia in World Cup qualifying. Hopefully, this time, the fan favourite can return injury-free.

The former Aberdeen, Livi and Dunfermline player said this could help the striker reach full match fitness as he looks to maintain his form at club level.

He told Football insider;

“One thing that you have to do if you are manager of a domestic team is maintain contact with international managers. You have to talk,”

“You’ve got to communicate about players and where they are injury-wise and what they may need – it’s reassuring to know they’re being looked after.

“Sometimes it’s nice to have that separation from your domestic football to go away with your international side. It can work differently for a player mentally.

“International football can spark you back into life as well as giving you the training you will need.

“He will absolutely get a bit of match sharpness from the experience, and Celtic can reap the benefits of that.

“If Japan are successful and are winning games and Kyogo is scoring goals, he can take that back into his domestic football.

“Celtic will be crossing their fingers that he comes back in better shape than he left.”

Kyogo has returned to the league in goal scoring form, after chesting the ball into the net at Pittodrie last weekend. He will look to add to the three goals he has netted for his country.
