The 23-year-old has fallen out of favour under former manager Ange Postecoglou and did not play in the final run-in of games last season, despite the injury to Carter-Vickers and Yuki Kobayashi falling to the bench. Instead, midfielder, Tomoki Iwata, slotted in at the back.

Now, with Brendan Rodgers at the helm, Welsh’s future at Celtic Park is uncertain.

Italian sides Hellas Verona and Bologna are reportedly interested in the Scottish centre-back. Both teams have a history of signing players from the Scottish Premiership, having secured Josh Doig from Hibs in a £3million deal last summer. A move to Bologna could see Welsh team up with former Aberdeen star Lewis Ferguson.

Celtic has reportedly rejected several approaches for Welsh over the past 18 months. However, with Cameron Carter-Vickers, Carl Starfelt, Tomoki Iwata, and Yuki Kobayashi all ahead of him in the pecking order, the Scottish champions may not stand in his way this time.
