Carl Starfelt has admitted that he would be chuffed to join the list of unlikely Hampden heroes for Celtic in the League Cup.

In previous years against Rangers in the final of the competition, it has been a centre back who has popped up with the winning goal.

Starfelt bagged his first goals for the club back in August but has yet to score but sees Sunday as an opportunity to break the duck.

Since returning after the World Cup break, Celtic’s form has been terrific once again and a big part of that is down to the defensive partnership of Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Their priority on Sunday will be to keep the ball out of danger zone for the Hoops but Starfelt wouldn’t mind if he also got involved in the action at the other end of the park.

During the last League Cup final meeting between both sides, the surprise hero was Christopher Jullien who latched on to Ryan Christie’s free kick to stick the ball past Allan McGregor which turned out to be the only goal of the game which helped the Hoops to go on and win an unprecedented quadruple treble.

Celtic fans will hope that this final isn’t as tense as that but ten years previous it was also a centre back who grabbed the headlines when Darren O’Dea scored his first goal in two years in extra time to give Gordon Strachan’s side the victory.

It was Celtic’s first win in a cup final in 20 years and so far this season, it has been the Hoops who have had the bragging rights in the derby match.

“I will do my best. That would be nice,” said Starfelt when asked about emulating previous cup final heroics by the [Daily Record].

“It is too difficult to predict. We will go in with our gameplan. We will go in to play our football and how it will play out, we will see.

“In these games, you need 100 per cent concentration in every situation. It can be a set-piece or a counter-attack, it can be anything so you need to concentrate. It is a big thing to never relax, but to always be focused and concentrated.”
