Former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has made it clear he has not gone to Al-Nassr to make up the numbers.
For Celtic supporters, Postecoglou’s next move will always carry interest. His two years in Glasgow brought a complete rebuild, an attacking style that quickly clicked, and five trophies before he moved to the Premier League.
Now he has taken on a very different challenge in Riyadh, and his first message to Al-Nassr supporters was exactly what many would expect from him.
Speaking to Al-Nassr, Postecoglou said: “Coming to Riyadh and starting this project is an exciting challenge in my career. Al Nassr is more than just a football club.
“It is a historic institution with an exceptional fan base, and my goal is to build a team that reflects that greatness on the pitch. I came here to win trophies.
“The Saudi Pro League has become a global competition, and we have the players and the resources to put Al Nassr on top both domestically and in Asia.
“The work starts immediately to turn those ambitions into reality.”
That is classic Postecoglou. He rarely talks like a manager easing himself into a job. Wherever he goes, the message tends to be direct: build quickly, play on the front foot, and aim for silverware.
Celtic saw that first-hand. He arrived at Parkhead during a difficult period and did not waste time lowering expectations. Instead, he changed the squad, changed the mood and gave the team a clear identity again.
Al-Nassr will bring a different type of pressure. The profile of the Saudi Pro League has grown sharply, and with the names involved at the top clubs, results will be expected quickly.
Postecoglou has never been one to step away from scrutiny, though. His comments suggest he sees this as another project where he can impose his ideas and chase trophies straight away.
