Arne Engels has been rewarded for his performance in Celtic’s win over Dundee Utd. He’s a player who has divided much opinion, but one who can prove to be a big performer under Martin O’Neill.

The midfielder scored in Saturday’s win, marking O’Neill’s return to the dugout with a perfect start. The Hoops maintained their tempo during the game, something that hasn’t been seen in recent weeks, with Engels neatly finishing off the move for the second goal of the match.

Engels’ performance has earned him a spot in the official SPFL Team of the Week. He played with confidence under the 73-year-old before, so there’s no saying why he can’t continue to replicate such form again.

The Belgium international praised the positive mood around the club when O’Neill was brought in to steer the ship after Brendan Rodgers’ departure. It’s clear that O’Neill’s man-management has had a positive effect on his game, something that seemingly lacked for him and many others under Wilfried Nancy. 

Engels was a standout in O’Neill’s penultimate match in his first interim spell. He gave the Hoops a quick-fire lead away to Hibs and sealed a crucial win, sustaining an injury in the process.

However, many supporters are eager to see more consistency from him, particularly in big games. He’ll welcome O’Neill’s return and be eager to kick on during a turbulent season at the club.
