Jim Craig will return to the tunnel at the Estadio Nacional today, almost 60 years after walking out there as part of Celtic’s greatest ever team.
The Lisbon Lions are being honoured in Portugal with a new exhibition at the National Stadium in Jamor, the scene of Celtic’s 1967 European Cup triumph over Inter Milan.
The exhibition, titled “From Glasgow to Glory – Celtic’s 1967 European Triumph in Jamor, Lisbon”, will be placed inside the access tunnel at the stadium and will remain there for a full year.
It is a fitting location. For Celtic supporters, Jamor is not just another football ground. It is the place where Jock Stein’s side changed the club forever and became the first British team to win the European Cup.
The display will include photographs, historical material and commemorative items telling the story of Celtic’s road to Lisbon and the legacy of the team who lifted the trophy.
Speaking ahead of the event, Craig said: (Celtic FC), “It is a fantastic for the club and the Lions to be honoured in this way.
“We will always enjoy such a strong connection with the city and the people of the city and for such recognition to be given to us really is very humbling.
“I remember being in that tunnel all those years ago – the anticipation, the trepidation and above all, the feeling of pride.”
Craig added: “It will be amazing to be back in that tunnel as we attend this wonderful event. It is hard to believe that our famous victory took place almost 60 years ago, but initiatives like this really do keep this alive and bring even more colour again to that great day so many years on.
“On behalf of the Lions and all our families, I sincerely thank everyone who has put so much effort into this great project.”
The exhibition will be open to visitors when the stadium is open from Monday to Friday, giving Celtic supporters another reason to make the trip to Jamor over the next year.
