Celtic’s Final Gvidas Gineitis Bid

Celtic’s failed move for Gvidas Gineitis appears to have ended earlier than some deadline-day reports suggested.

CeltsAreHere understands Celtic’s last offer for the Torino midfielder was submitted on Monday, August 31, with the Hoops proposing a package worth €6million plus add-ons.

That offer was rejected by Torino later that evening.

By Tuesday, the Serie A club were understood to be ready to sell Gineitis for a package worth around €8million, plus a 10 per cent sell-on clause. Torino then waited to see whether Celtic would return with an improved proposal before deciding if the Lithuanian midfielder should start against Monza in the Coppa Italia.

No new Celtic bid arrived.

Gineitis then started for Torino on Tuesday night, a clear sign that the move had not reached the stage required for the player to be left out.

Despite reports suggesting Celtic ramped up talks again on Wednesday and Thursday, CeltsAreHere understands otherwise. The deal had not moved forward after Torino’s revised position, and no agreement was reached between the clubs.

It is also understood that personal terms were never agreed with the player.

Gineitis had been on Celtic’s radar for much of the summer, with Martin O’Neill believed to have wanted the 22-year-old midfielder added to his squad. His physical data and Serie A profile made him an obvious fit for the type of energy Celtic were looking to add in the middle of the park.

But the move never got to the point where Celtic could close it.

Torino were open to selling at the right price and structure, but Celtic did not return with the bid required after their €6million offer was rejected.

The window has now closed, and Gineitis remains a Torino player.
