Celtic officially said goodbye to their Greek striker this week when Atlanta FC confirmed the signing of Giorgos Giakoumakis.
It ended the frontman’s stay in Glasgow after 18 months.
When any player is sold or let go, there are many things to consider. One big consideration for the retail section of the club is how they’re going to get rid of stock related to the player. Sometimes a panic button is hit to try and quickly reduce the stock they have.
The club regularly sell signed shirts and prints from the current squad and offer them up to the support for some hefty prices.
Interest in the Giakoumakis stock has just plummeted dramatically after his departure but the club still still need to sell them.
Today, the Celtic store made their move to try and tempt collectors into parting with their cash.
They’ve taken £100 off the signed Giakoumakis shirt, but considering it was £425 to begin with, it’s still pretty steep for a now ex-player. The costs to make up such an item are pretty low for the club, surely can do better…
The signed print of Giak has gone from £125, to £75.
Will it be enough to tickle someone’s fancy?
Other items the club attempted to sell once the person had left the building is quite amusing.
Brendan Rodgers book was still in store recently at the bargain price of £3. We had a Jonjoe kenny pair of boots going for over £300 six months after his I’ll-fated move to Celtic ended.
If you leave the club with a legacy intact, the items rarely hit the sale bin. Henrik Larsson merchandise is still red hot to this day. Giakoumakis hasn’t left a legacy to have his items retain their value.
Not just in this instance most of the stuff in the shop is way overpriced and that includes the the cheap rails.
The club could retire the number by way of renaming the North Stand ‘The N°7 Stand’, just a thought.
A fool and his money are easily parted. Evidenced by the number of eejits who wasted their money on “Shut yer hole, fat boy’ shirts & scarfs, thinking they are very clever.
