The latest story in the Scottish Premiership surrounds Celtic’s assistant manager, John Kennedy, who is reportedly on the radar of Hearts. However, the path to securing Kennedy’s services is not as straightforward as it might seem.

According to a recent report by SunSport, Hearts would have to trigger a six-figure release clause if they wish to initiate talks with Kennedy. This stipulation, set in place by the Celtic hierarchy, is a testament to Kennedy’s value within the club and the desire to retain his services.

Kennedy, a stalwart of Celtic, has been associated with the club since his youth. His promising football career was cut short prematurely, but Kennedy didn’t let this setback deter him. Instead, he transitioned into various roles within the club, serving as a scout, development coach, first-team coach, and assistant manager under the likes of Neil Lennon, Ronny Deila, Brendan Rodgers, and currently, Ange Postecoglou.

His tenure at Celtic has been marked by success, with the club winning 19 trophies during his nine years on the backroom staff, including a remarkable quadruple Treble. This track record, coupled with his deep understanding of the club’s ethos, makes Kennedy a coveted managerial prospect.

Hearts, currently under the interim management of Stevie Naismith, are believed to be considering their options if they decide not to make Naismith’s position permanent. Kennedy, who turns 40 in August, is viewed by the Hearts hierarchy as a strong alternative. However, the six-figure compensation bill might prove to be a stumbling block.

Kennedy, who reportedly declined an approach from Hibs in 2019, is known to harbour ambitions of being a manager in his own right. The challenge at Hearts could potentially be the opportunity he’s been waiting for, but the question remains: will Hearts trigger the release clause?

The coming weeks will undoubtedly bring more clarity to the situation. For now, Celtic fans can rest assured that their club values Kennedy highly, as evidenced by the release clause. I don’t think Ange would hold JK back if he wanted to go.
