Celtic Women welcomed SWPL champions Glasgow City to Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium on Thursday evening. After what was a dramatic 90 minutes, the Ghirls came away with a memorable 2-1 win.
Chloe Craig opened the scoring in the second half from the spot, netting with utmost accuracy into the bottom left corner:

Moments after this, the visitors did draw themselves level although going into the final stages, Fran Alonso’s team took the game by the scruff of the neck. In the box, the ball fell to Colette Cavanagh who controlled well and drilled it low and into the back of the net to spark scenes of sheer elation in the 88th minute:

For the final moments, Celtic had to stand firm and they did just that, seeing out the game professionally to take home a colossal three SWPL points. Tonight’s result meant the Ghirls kept their impeccable 100% league record going for the season, whilst also maintaining their position at the top of the table.
Alonso would have gone home a happy man after the victory, one that his side will want to replicate in a few weeks time when they face City once again in the Sky Sports Cup. Before that, though, a number of league games lie in wait against the likes of Motherwell, Partick Thistle, Rangers, and Dundee United.
