When the Belgian FA called a halt to their season and declared winners and losers it was followed by a hardline stance from UEFA that repercussions could follow. The threat from the powers to be was expulsion from European competition next season. This left the waters muddy for member organisations to proceed how they saw fit.

In Scotland this week, it was voted in favour to finish up all leagues and hand out prize money. This excluded the Scottish Premiership, everyone is still in the dark as to what decision will be made, but a UEFA meeting on Thursday might make things a bit clearer.

Record Sport is reporting today that UEFA is ready to relax with their initial hardline stance on leagues been wrapped up early when it is clear games cannot be played. Dutch legend and usually a good advocate for Celtic on the European stage, Edwin van der Sar is the newspaper’s source.

The former Man United keeper said:

“I’ve spoken to UEFA a lot and the relationship between us now is good, despite us making clear we want to end the Eredivisie immediately so clubs can get paid out. I believe UEFA’s position on medium and smaller leagues has changed.”

“Certainly, I no longer believe there will be any possibility of possible sanctions that would exclude teams from European football next season.”

“Throughout this, we have been in close contact with UEFA, the European Clubs’ Association and of course all the other teams from our league and there is a growing belief everything will be decided next week.”

The SPFL will take part in a meeting on Thursday with all 55 members and it is thought after that meeting that Celtic will be named champions. The SPFL have had threats of legal action against them from some of their own clubs so hopefully with the backing and assurances from UEFA they can take the leaders role that some quarters have called for.
