Former Celtic star Chris Sutton has pulled no punches in his assessment of the current state of the squad, declaring that the team is “miles weaker” than it was just a few months ago when they clinched the treble.

With the transfer window set to close in just six days, Sutton has called for no fewer than five new signings to bolster the team.

Writing in the Daily Record, Sutton described the current situation as “extraordinary,” emphasising that the clock is ticking for Celtic to make the necessary moves in the transfer market. “Celtic are not just weaker – they are miles weaker. Rodgers might need to sign five players this week, and all of them will have to be first-team ready. That’s an extraordinary situation to be in at this stage, when the season is already up and running.”

While acknowledging the impact of injuries on the squad, Sutton was quick to point out that the problems run deeper.

“I get the injury problems are seriously damaging the team. Losing Cameron Carter-Vickers and Reo Hatate would hamper any side. But that doesn’t hide the overall problem right now. Celtic just have not kicked on. Losing Jota was a blow, but he left in the first week in July. It’s now nearly September. You can’t do much about Aaron Mooy retiring but he announced his decision a long time ago.”

Sutton’s comments add to the growing sense of urgency among fans. With the Champions League campaign looming and domestic challenges ahead, the need for reinforcements is becoming increasingly apparent. The former striker’s call for five new signings underlines the scale of the task facing the club in the coming days.

As the transfer window inches closer to its conclusion, the pressure is mounting on Celtic to make the moves that will strengthen the squad and give them a fighting chance in the competitions that lie ahead. Failure to do so could result in a season that falls well short of the high expectations that both fans and former players like Sutton have for the club.
