Celtic take on Kilmarnock this weekend in the last 16 of the Viaplay Cup. The Hoops are aiming to win the trophy for the third year running but Brendan Rodgers knows the treble-winning champions have to take things game by game at the minute.

First up is a trip to Ayrshire to take on Kilmarnock on Sunday afternoon. It will be an arduous away tie for the Bhoys although they defeated Killie every time they played them last season.

Their clash with the Rugby Park side in January could’ve been rather different had a late penalty had been awarded. Derek McInnes is still bitter about the decision not to award a spot kick to his side in last season’s league cup semi-final.

Indeed the 52-year-old spoke to the media about it as recently as Thursday. He said (Glasgow Times): “Last season in the semi-final at Hampden we felt really aggrieved that we never got the chance to take it to extra time. Nothing will change my mind that we should’ve had a penalty kick in the last minute of the game.”

Clearly, the Killie boss is still hurt that his side never got the opportunity to get one back late on. Had they been awarded the spot kick and resultantly drew level, then we may have seen a different outcome to the game. We didn’t, though, and after all, these events transpired over half a year ago.

The Scot cannot seem to leave this decision in the past and this weekend, he will be hoping there are no errors of judgement that may or may not cost his side. The Scottish champions usually don’t need any contentious decisions to take victory and on Sunday, their aim will be for their football to do the talking.
